FREQUENTLY  ASKED  QUESTIONS

1.  Is Tikkun Long Island a religious organization?

Not at all, and in fact many of us are not Jewish.  We're just a socially conscious group of people who like the concept of Tikkun Olam.  We are not a religious organization, and we welcome people of all different faiths (or lack thereof).

2.  What do you "do" exactly?

We plan events, organize school assemblies, provide mentoring services to individuals in the criminal justice system, and promote healing in crime-affected communities.  You can visit out our Programming and Events pages to learn more about what we do on a daily basis.

3.  Is there any reason to think your programming actually "works"?

Absolutely.  There is a wealth of rigorous academic research evidence to support the idea that healing and restorative justice initiatives better serve victims, perpetrators, and the public than the traditional criminal justice system.  We are currently working to build a page about that research, and are committed to rigorously monitoring & evaluating our programming and honestly sharing the results.

4.  What is restorative justice?

Restorative Justice is an approach to justice that removes vengeance from the process. It focuses solely on the needs of victims and offenders without seeking to satisfy abstract legal principles or blindly inflicting punishment.  It emphasizes repairing the harm caused by crime, and in Rob’s experience it is transformational for both victims and offenders.

5.  How is Tikkun paid for?

Our programming is 100% donor-supported.  That means schools, children, criminal offenders, and victims pay none of the costs of delivering Tikkun's life-changing programs.  If you believe in healing -- and in Tikkun's novel, effective, and proven strategies for healing crime-affected communities and individuals on Long Island -- then please, consider making a donation, and change a life today.

6.  Is my donation tax deductible?

Not yet.  We are still in the process of obtaining 501(c)3 status.  As soon as we are designated a 501(c) tax-exempt organization by the IRS, your donation will be tax deductible and we will gladly update this space.
